Means to clean Singapore and to attract tourists.
In the 1970s, PM Lee Kuan Yew was being challenged by the vision to clean up the Singapore and Kallang Rivers. Thus, the government agencies led a massive 10 year clean-up of the rivers. During that period of time, hawkers, squatters and pollutive industries were relocated. In the 1980s, new developments were being built by the river as it was being cleared up. Also, during the 1990s, riverside attractions were built.
